After 14 years of struggle upwardly mobile Brighton unveiled their new stadium, a week before their return to the Championship, with an entertaining defeat to Tottenham.

Craig Mackail-Smith scored Brighton’s first goal at the American Express Community Stadium on 11 minutes. Spurs, without Luka Modric due to illness and who also lost Rafael van der Vaart to injury on 38 minutes, responded with goals from Younes Kaboul (Bale trickery down the right) and Vedran Corluka.

Kazenga LuaLua fired an equaliser for Brighton with a mazy run and finish but the friendly match was settled by an error from Peter Brezovan who gifted Jake Livermore the Tottenham winner on 69.
